Go Canada Go!

I am in Vancouver taking in the Olympic games and swimming in a sea of national pride exhibited through red and white sweaters, ‘Canada’ hoodies, scarves and HBC Olympic souvenir mittens.  There are crowds and line-ups everywhere but that only adds to the spirit of the games.  The sun, spring like weather, budding crocuses and blooming cherry blossoms are among the many great reasons to be outside in Vancouver.

The city is alive with Olympic fever, even the neighbourhood bakery has jumped on board!

Olympic Sweets

My sister, Nicole, and I enjoyed the sites while walking down Cambie Street and over the Cambie bridge to the Latvia/Slovakia hockey game on Saturday.  As we approached Canada Hockey Place (aka GM Place, home of the Vancouve Canucks) we caught a glimpse of Quatchi and Miga, two of the 2010 Olympic mascots…a photo op my nephews would love!

We figured that being of neither Latvian nor Slovakian descent we quickly had to decide who to cheer for.  I remembered the Latvians being the most jovial fans during the 2008 World Men’s Hockey Championships in Halifax and the decision was made.  If you’ve been following the games you know that Latvia lost, 6-0, but we had fun.

The Final Score

Today we watched as the US Women’s Hockey Team beat the Swedes 9 – 1 in the first of two semi-final games.  Canada won their game against Finland and will play the US for gold on Thursday.

The Canadian Ice Dance team of Virtue & Moir have just won gold…time for me to go to bed!
